The Rivers State House of Assembly has received a petition against the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, over alleged waste and reckless use of taxpayers’ money.The petition, which was addressed to the office of the Speaker, called on the hallowed blue chamber to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Wike as a direct consequence of the high spate of executive impunity with which he directs the disbursement of taxpayers’ money
Prepared by U.S. Uchendu & Co., the document cited sections 120 and 121 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), positing that Governor Wike had no right to spend state funds outside the manner prescribed by the State House of Assembly.
“I have carefully read co-jointly sections 120, 121, 122, 123 and 124 of the said constitution and did not find anywhere where the apex law gave powers to the governor to lead his people into enormous poverty through unsolicited expenditures in the form of cash gifts, instead of wealth.”
You would recall that over the past few months, Governor Wike had made several donations to entertainers, governments of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Sokoto states, and the families of the slain police officers, all in excess of five billion naira; an act, which according to the petitioner, was unconstitutional and thus an arbitrary use of power.
