"Pay us our N18.3b or Remove Your Pipelines"-74 Host Communities Tell NLNG

Seventy-four communities located in Rivers state have issued an ultimatum to Nigeria LNG (NLNG) demanding payment of N18.3 billion as directed by the Senate within 30 days for the loss of farming rights on a 210 km land used for the company's gas transmission pipeline. If NLNG fails to comply, the communities will request the removal of the facility.

This decision follows the Senate's resolution in response to multiple petitions and the subsequent order for NLNG to make the payment. However, NLNG has challenged the Senate's resolution in court and obtained a restraining order, with a ruling scheduled for September 21.

The communities argue that NLNG has not paid them compensation since 1996 and has violated the provisions of the Oil Pipeline Act and Land Use Act.

They also accuse NLNG of attempting to construct an additional Gas Transmission Line on their lands without their payment or consent.
