Adaka Boro Day: Ijaw Youth Council Demands Restoration of Democracy in Rivers State

Port Harcourt, Nigeria - The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently restore democracy in Rivers State, expressing deep concern over the appointment of a sole administrator amid an ongoing political crisis. The appeal was made during a press conference on Thursday, May 15, 2025, in Port Harcourt, marking the 57th Adaka Boro Day celebration under the theme “Ijaw Nation Strength: A Pathway for Unity and Solidarity.”

IYC President Dr. Theophilus Alaye highlighted the state of emergency declared by Tinubu in March 2025, triggered by a prolonged conflict between Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This led to the appointment of retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as administrator for a six-month term. Alaye urged the president to reinstate Fubara’s executive powers and the State House of Assembly, stating, “The people of Rivers State deserve lawful governance that delivers the dividends of democracy and ensures people-oriented development.”

Criticizing the emergency rule, Alaye noted, “Removing our governor is not what the people expected from a true democrat like you. Our people are emotional, and we cannot pacify them for too long.” He acknowledged Tinubu’s peace efforts but emphasized the need for swift restoration, warning that patience is wearing thin as an unelected entity occupies the Government House.

Beyond democracy, Alaye addressed regional development issues. He called for increased funding for the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) to better support ex-agitators’ reintegration and education, and requested new opportunities to absorb more Ijaw agitators to eliminate remaining armed groups in the creeks. He also demanded the removal of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), arguing it would enable more impactful projects for oil-producing communities. Additionally, the IYC pressed for the urgent completion of the East-West Road, a vital economic lifeline for the Niger Delta and South-South region, citing its incomplete state as a threat to lives and development.

The IYC’s demands reflect growing frustration with federal policies, resonating with sentiments expressed across the region as stakeholders seek stability and progress.
