BUGUMA WOMEN ASK FOR THE PROSECUTION OF MEN WHO FAIL TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR KIDS

Women in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Rivers State have complained about a widespread behaviour by Kalabari men to abandon their family, leaving the women to cater for their children. The complaints came during the celebration of the International Women Day organized by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Rivers State.

At the event, FIDA educated women about their rights in the family and the society, and after the event, some of the women who spoke to reporters talked about some of the irresponsible actions they have endured at the hands of their husbands and other men. These include neglect, abandonment, infidelity, and abuse.

One women narrated how she was abandoned by her partner whom she has 4 children with. She said the man stopped caring for her and the children, and left after 19 years to marry another woman.

The women said after being educated by FIDA, they will report such cases to the organization, and seek for the men to be prosecuted.

FIDA is a Non-Governmental Organization that seeks to promote the welfare of women and children through legal representation, advocacy for legislations that promote the advancement and protection of women, educative and enlightening programmes for women, etc.
