The cluster of foreign currency traders around Birabi street in GRA are expected to vacate their prominent location, when the ongoing road construction is completed.
The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike made this known when he inspected the construction site on Wednesday. In a press statement released by the Governor’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, the Governor was quoted saying "Those who engage in foreign exchange trading along Birabi Street have been informed that they will move." The statement said the decision was in congruence with the government’s plan to improve the aesthetic of the street, and create a green area. The foreign currency traders in GRA are found mainly around Birabi and Emeyal streets in GRA. The statement did not say if the decision will affect traders in Emeyal street or if they will be relocated to a specific location. But it is expected that they could move to other areas in GRA closer, than farther from their current prominent location.
