The management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) called for a press briefing on Monday, to announce that in two weeks, it will conduct a mass burial for over 800 unclaimed corpses at the hospital’s morgue.
The Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Henry Ugboma said the hospital was facing a congestion, and as required by law, is expected to inform the public before conducting a mass burial.
“Those who have dropped bodies here, should come and pick them up. Immediately we end this announcement (period), we are going to carry out a mass burial for those corpses that are not taken, as required by law.”
Dr. Ugboma also mentioned that the hospital cannot afford to continue spending its resources to cater for unclaimed bodies indefinitely.
“Some of them have been here for years without anybody coming to attend to them. It is consuming our resources and space, and there is no space to keep new bodies that are brought in.”
