Rivers State House of Assembly condemns use of security agencies to disrupt Port Harcourt State Constituency Three Election

As a democratic Institution and in line with democratic values and principles, while giving consideration to representation to all parts of the state and people in the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Rivers State
House of Assembly under the leadership of the Rt Hon Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, Speaker of the Rivers State House Of Assembly through a correspondence, informed the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission through the Resident Electoral Commissioner that the Port Harcourt Constituency three seat has become vacant as a result of the resignation of the former member who was duly elected to represent the constituency.

This was done in the belief of Justice, fairness and equity to all and INEC complied in furtherance of the electoral act and fixed the election on the 18th August, 2018.

As a state and as a people, we deserve the best in terms of practice and proceeds associated with democracy. That we should eschew politics of brigandage, thuggery and violence against our people anywhere it may occur as in the case of the Port Harcourt Constituency three Bye Election in Rivers State. Such acts are condemnable because they negate the values of democracy.

In addition, the complicity of security agencies who ought to protect civil organizations or institutions of government is appalling, detestable and infact debasement and immoral by all standards of rules of engagement.

As an Assembly, our prayers are with the people of Port Harcourt Constituency 3 and we hope that the election will be re-conducted and the vacant seat in the House occupied for adequate representation of all sections of the state.

God bless Rivers State

Signed:

Rt Hon Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, DSSRS, ksc
Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly.
