Army GOC Commissions New Building and Road in Port Harcourt Barracks

To address the pressing accommodation needs of personnel within the Nigerian Army's 6 Division, the outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major-General Jamal Abdussalam, commissioned a significant development project within the barracks. This included a six-flat Officers Transit Accommodation and a 150-meter road, unveiled on Wednesday during the division's change of command ceremony.

The building project, initiated on July 11, 2024, by the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, was aptly named after him. Similarly, the road was named after the current COAS, Major-General Olufemi Oluyede.

According to Major-General Abdussalam, the Officers Transit Accommodation aims to provide temporary housing solutions for officers, while the newly constructed road will facilitate the development of a larger area within the barracks. He emphasized, "Accommodation challenges within the barracks have been a significant concern, and these projects represent a crucial step towards alleviating these issues for our personnel."

The GOC highlighted that these developments are part of the division's ongoing commitment to enhancing the welfare of its personnel.

Furthermore, the GOC unveiled a redesigned and reconstructed 6 Division python monument, symbolizing the division's mascot and embodying its motto of "Stealth and Adaptability." Explaining the choice of the python as the division's mascot, the GOC noted its prevalence in the region and its characteristics that align perfectly with the division's operational ethos.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior officers and personnel of the 6 Division, who commended the GOC's efforts in modernizing the barracks.
