Rivers State Police have dismantled a child trafficking ring in Chococho, Etche Local Government Area, rescuing two children and arresting two women. The suspects allegedly defrauded two other women by falsely promising to arrange baby adoptions.
Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated that the operation took place on January 24, 2025, and identified the arrested women as Ugochukwu Onyebuchi and Ogechi Nmezi. They are accused of luring Gift Chimanu (mother of two-month-old Evidence Olomachukwu Chimanu) and Hope Onyebuchi (mother of one-year-old Chukwuemeka Kingsley) into their scheme.
The suspects were apprehended at a checkpoint in Chococho. Preliminary investigations suggest they worked with members of a local vigilante group (OSPAC). The suspects have confessed and are in custody, while police are searching for other members of the syndicate, including the implicated OSPAC members.
The rescued children have been reunited with their families. Iringe-Koko emphasized the police's commitment to combating child trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals.
