Elder Statesman Edwin Clark Passes Away at 97


Kiagbodo, Delta State, Nigeria - February 18, 2025 - Edwin Clark, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and a staunch advocate for the Niger Delta region, has died at the age of 97. The former Federal Commissioner for Information and Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) passed away on Monday night, February 17th, according to a statement released by his family.

"The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday 17th February , 2025," the statement confirmed.

Clark, a revered elder statesman, leaves behind a legacy defined by his unwavering commitment to social justice and the development of the South-South region.

A Life of Service and Advocacy

Born in Kiagbodo, in the Ijaw area of present-day Delta State, Edwin Clark's journey was one of remarkable dedication to public service. His educational foundation was built at primary and secondary schools in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene, culminating in further studies at the Government Teacher Training College, now Delta State University, Abraka.

Following a brief period as a school teacher, Clark pursued his passion for law, earning a degree abroad. Upon his return, he transitioned into a career marked by significant political involvement.

His contributions to Nigerian governance began during the military administrations of Samuel Ogbemudia and General Yakubu Gowon between 1966 and 1975. In 1966, he served on an advisory committee to the military governor of the Mid-Western Region province, David Ejoor. His dedication and expertise led to his appointment as Federal Commissioner of Information in 1975.

Champion of the Niger Delta

In his later years, Edwin Clark became a powerful voice for the Niger Delta, advocating for resource control, environmental justice, and equitable development for the region. As Chairman of PANDEF, he played a crucial role in fostering dialogue and addressing the grievances of the Niger Delta communities.
