Two Dead in Okrika Electrocution Incident Amid Power Surge

In a tragic incident in Okrika, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, two individuals were electrocuted due to an electrical surge in the early hours of Monday. Grace Iringe-Koko, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, confirmed to TheCable that the community had been without power for some time before the incident. When electricity was restored, an electrical fault led to the deaths of two people in separate buildings.

According to Iringe-Koko, “There was no power, and when it was restored, an electrical fault electrocuted two persons in different buildings, and the two of them died.” The victims were rushed to a hospital but were pronounced dead. The police are currently investigating the cause of the electrical fault.

Electrocution incidents are a recurring problem in Nigeria, with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reporting 31 deaths from electrical accidents in the last quarter of 2021 alone. Electrical sparks have also been linked to numerous market fires across the country, highlighting ongoing challenges with electrical safety.
