Tragedy in Port Harcourt: Woman Allegedly Sets Lover Ablaze Amid Pregnancy Dispute

Port Harcourt, July 10, 2025 – The Rivers State Police Command has arrested Cynthia Chukwundah, initially identified as a 300-level undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), for allegedly setting her lover, Saint Sunny Amadi, on fire following a domestic dispute. The incident, which occurred on Sunday at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, has left the community in shock.

According to police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the altercation reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over Chukwundah’s pregnancy, with Amadi, a 32-year-old from Elibrada Community in Emohua LGA, being the father of her unborn child. The argument escalated, leading to Chukwundah allegedly setting Amadi ablaze in a room. Amadi sustained severe burns and was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Chukwundah, who also suffered burns in the incident, is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital under police surveillance. Due to her critical condition and advanced pregnancy, she has not yet provided a detailed account of the events. “A thorough investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Iringe-Koko stated, adding that the probable cause of the fire remains under investigation.

However, UNIPORT has since clarified that Chukwundah is not a student of the institution. In a statement issued on Tuesday by Dr. Sammy Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, the university said, “Following thorough internal checks and verification of our student records, Cynthia Chukwundah is not a student of the University of Port Harcourt.” The university expressed condolences to the affected families and pledged support for the ongoing police investigation.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has called for calm, assuring the public that justice will be served. The police are urging residents to refrain from speculation as investigations continue.
