Urgent Flood Alert: Nigerian Government Warns of Five-Day Flooding in 19 States

Port Harcourt, August 6, 2025 – The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a critical warning of heavy rainfall expected to cause flooding across 19 states and 76 locations over the next five days. According to a report by Punch Newspapers, the affected states include Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Rivers, and Sokoto, along with the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja).

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reports that flooding this year has already impacted 134,435 people across 20 states, with Niger State recording the highest fatalities at 163, followed by Adamawa with 26 deaths. Additionally, 48,056 individuals have been displaced, 239 injuries reported, and 9,499 houses and 9,450 farmlands damaged. In Rivers State, part of the flood-prone Niger Delta, residents are urged to stay vigilant and take preventive measures.

Local authorities in flood-prone areas like Bayelsa and Delta are intensifying efforts to clear drainage systems and set up temporary shelters. The report highlights the destruction of vast farmlands in areas like Illela-Chofal, raising concerns about food insecurity. NEMA and state agencies are collaborating to distribute relief and implement long-term flood mitigation strategies.

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid crossing flooded areas.

  • Relocate from flood-prone zones to higher ground.

  • Stay updated with weather forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and NEMA.

  • Cooperate with local emergency services.
