Ahoada, Rivers State – November 20, 2025 – Communities situated along the River Niger axis in Rivers State are currently grappling with a severe flooding crisis, triggered by continuous and heavy rainfall over the past few days. The hardest-hit areas are the local government areas of Ahoada West and Ahoada East.
Widespread Submergence and Displacement
Residents in these riverside communities report a grim situation, with large expanses of farmlands submerged and numerous homes inundated by the rising water levels. The crisis has led to widespread forced displacement, as families abandon their homes and seek safety on higher ground.
State Response and Immediate Action
The Rivers State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed the deployment of personnel and is currently working to mitigate the humanitarian fallout. SEMA is actively:
Mobilizing relief materials, including food, bedding, and basic medical supplies.
Setting up temporary camps and emergency shelters in less affected areas to house the displaced populations.
Urgent Appeals for Intervention
Despite the state's efforts, the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local capacity. Community leaders and SEMA officials are issuing urgent appeals for broader support.
The primary action being called for is the intervention of the Federal Government of Nigeria and international/local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). These bodies are urgently needed to provide large-scale assistance, including heavy-duty relief supplies, medical support, and long-term aid for rebuilding livelihoods lost to the floods.
