The FRSC has issued a stern warning to Port Harcourt drivers following a tragic high-speed accident at the Rumuola junction that left two people dead early Monday morning. The crash, involving a vehicle returning from a nightclub, was attributed to excessive speeding and a failure to navigate the roundabout; tragically, one victim survived the initial impact only to be killed by another vehicle while returning to the wreckage for a personal item.
It’s a sobering Tuesday for the Garden City. We’ve all seen the Rumuola roundabout during the day busy, chaotic, and bustling. But in the early hours of Monday morning, that same stretch of road became the site of a heartbreaking tragedy that serves as a grim reminder for every driver in Port Harcourt.
According to eyewitnesses and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), a vehicle reportedly carrying occupants returning from a nightclub—was speeding through the deserted streets. As the driver approached the Rumuola junction, the high velocity made it impossible to negotiate the roundabout.
Rivers State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Umoh Inyang, shared a chilling detail about the incident. While the initial crash was severe, it wasn't immediately fatal for everyone.
One of the victims reportedly survived the impact and stepped out of the vehicle. However, in a split-second decision to return to the car possibly to grab a phone charger—he was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle. In total, two lives were lost in the sequence of events.
"There is no need for excessive speeding... These lives we lose on the road are avoidable if we obey simple traffic rules," Umoh Inyang, FRSC Sector Commander.
