Over 2,000 health workers recruited in Rivers – Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently showcased his administration’s milestones in the Rivers State health sector, noting that the past two and a half years have seen a massive overhaul of infrastructure and manpower. From reviving abandoned zonal hospitals in Bori, Omoku, Ahoada, and Degema to remodelling 153 Primary Healthcare Centres, the Governor emphasized a "people first" approach. Key highlights include the recruitment of over 2,500 new health workers, the launch of a state health insurance scheme, and a pioneering move to integrate mental health services into rural primary care to help citizens cope with current economic pressures.

This Tuesday, at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara laid out a roadmap showing exactly how his administration has been working to ensure that every Treasure Base resident can breathe a little easier.

From the heart of the city to the farthest rural communities, the healthcare landscape in Rivers is getting a much-needed facelift. Here’s a breakdown of the major wins for the state:

We’ve all seen buildings sit idle for years, but the Governor is changing that narrative. Several previously abandoned facilities have been revived and expanded.

  • Zonal Hospitals: Bori, Omoku, Ahoada, and Degema are back on the map.

  • The Ahoada Spotlight: The Ahoada Zonal Hospital is now a 105-bed secondary facility, ready to serve its catchment area with modern standards.

Healthcare shouldn't require a three-hour drive. Governor Fubara revealed that 153 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) have been remodelled. The goal? To ensure that our rural communities aren't left behind.

In a move that shows true empathy for the times we are in, the administration is introducing mental health services at the primary healthcare level.

"We are not just catering for those down with common diseases such as malaria... we want to ensure our people get the right attention to their mental health at the right time,"Governor Fubara.

A hospital is only as good as its doctors and nurses. To fix the capacity gap, the state has:

  • Recruited over 2,000 new health workers to strengthen general efficiency.

  • Promoted 400 existing hospital staff and added another 500 members to the workforce.

  • Increased scholarships for Rivers indigenes at PAMO University of Medical Sciences from 100 to 150.

At the tertiary level, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) hasn't been ignored. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been fully revamped with state-of-the-art ventilators, monitors, and scanners, ensuring that critical care is available right here in PH.

With the establishment of the Rivers State Health Insurance Scheme, the administration is making a clear play for "Universal Health Coverage." While there is always more work to be done, the revival of our zonal hospitals and the focus on mental health are massive steps in the right direction.
