INEC Fixes June 20 for Rivers South-East Bye-Election: What Registered Voters Need to Know

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced Saturday, June 20, 2026, as the date for the crucial bye-election in the Rivers South-East Senatorial District. The seat became vacant following the tragic passing of Senator Barinada Mpigi.

According to the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alalibo Johnson, the election will take place across 88 electoral wards and 1,629 polling units. Over 858,000 registered voters are expected to participate across key local government areas, including Eleme, Gokana, Khana, Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Oyigbo, and Tai.

Key Takeaway for Residents: INEC is concurrently wrapping up its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) phase in Rivers State. Eligible citizens are strongly urged to collect, transfer, or replace damaged PVCs before the mid-June deadline. The Rivers State Police Command has promised total neutrality and tight security across all voting stations.
