Portharcourtblog can confirm that retail prices for cooking gas in major parts of the Garden City have spiked drastically, leaving residents and local food vendors in complete shock. A single kilogram of gas now sells for between ₦1,800 and ₦1,900 at several neighborhood retail outlets.
To put this brutal price hike into perspective, Port Harcourt families are now forced to cough up staggering amounts just to get a hot meal on the table:
5KG Cylinder: Now costs between ₦9,000 and ₦9,500 to refill.
12.5KG Cylinder: Is rapidly climbing toward ₦22,500 to ₦23,750.
Market stakeholders, local restaurant owners (popularly called Mama Put), and desperate housewives are openly pleading with the Rivers State and Federal Governments to intervene immediately before things spiral completely out of hand.
"We are going back to charcoal" — Residents Lament
Speaking with portharcourtblog reporters at a popular gas plant along Ada George Road, a mother of three, Mrs. Belema, shared her frustration:
"How can we survive? Foodstuffs are expensive, transport is high, and now to cook the food is another war. I can’t afford almost ₦24,000 to fill my 12.5kg cylinder. Many of my neighbors are already buying charcoal and firewood just to cope."
Market observers warn that if this energy crisis isn't checked, it will directly drive up the price of cooked food across Port Harcourt, hitting low-income earners the hardest.
