HEALTHCARE FOR ALL: RIVCHPP Takes Universal Health Coverage Drive to Rivers State University

The aggressive push to make quality healthcare accessible and affordable for every resident in Rivers State has reached a major milestone as the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) expands its campaign directly into the academic community, landing a strategic partnership with Rivers State University (RSU).

The initiative marks a vital step in bridging the healthcare gap for tertiary institutions, ensuring that students, academic staff, and non-academic personnel are shielded from out-of-pocket medical emergencies and catastrophic healthcare expenses.

Inside the RSU Partnership Drive

To drive the campaign forward, a high-level delegation from the state social health insurance agency, led by the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of RIVCHPP, Dr. Vetty Agala, paid a strategic courtesy visit to the university's management.

Streamlining Enrolment: The visit centered on engaging RSU's leadership and establishing a seamless framework for staff and students to enroll in the diverse health insurance packages tailored by the scheme.

The University's Buy-In: Welcoming the delegation, the Provost of the College of Medicine, Rivers State University, and Chairman of the University’s Ad Hoc Committee on Staff and Students’ Enrolment, Prof. Kenneth Ordu, lauded the visionary state program. He confirmed RSU’s total readiness to partner with the agency to safeguard the health and well-being of the university population.

Health Equity as a Right: Highlighting the administration's core philosophy, the RIVCHPP leadership emphasized that optimal healthcare should never be a privilege reserved for a select few, but a fundamental right accessible to all residents, including underserved populations across the state.

Protecting Rivers Residents Through Sustainable Insurance

As the state government continues to champion universal health coverage (UHC) under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State Ministry of Health led by Dr. Adaeze Oreh, programs like RIVCHPP are rapidly changing the medical landscape.

Comprehensive Packages: The insurance schemes cover a wide array of treatments, ranging from preventive care and common illness management to specialized care and maternal health services.

Shielding Families: Public health advocates have continually praised the scheme for breaking down financial barriers, ensuring that unexpected health crises do not derail the livelihoods of ordinary families in the state.

With RSU now onboard the strategic expansion train, the message to students and workers across the campus is clear: health security is closer, cheaper, and more accessible than ever.
