Rivers State’s economic landscape is set for a massive leap forward as industrial giant BUA Group commits a staggering $85 million toward the expansion of its terminal facilities right here in Port Harcourt.
Announced by BUA Group Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, during a strategic briefing with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) management in Lagos, the multi-million-dollar investment is primed to transform the eastern maritime corridor, drive double-digit growth in cargo throughput, and cement Port Harcourt’s status as a powerhouse for industrial logistics.
🏗️ Inside the $85 Million Port Transformation
The ambitious expansion project currently moving at an advanced pace and scheduled for completion next year is tailored to match the rapid, large-scale growth of BUA Foods and its wider industrial operations.
Key highlights of the development include:
Massive Quay Expansion: The project will add an impressive 600 metres of quay frontage, drastically improving berth availability.
Handling Larger Vessels: The upgraded infrastructure will easily accommodate larger cargo ships, enabling a steady stream of about 6 to 7 heavy vessels calling at the terminal every month.
The 2 Million-Tonne Target: Once fully operational, the terminal is projected to handle over 2 million tonnes of imported raw materials annually fueling BUA’s expanding footprint in flour, sugar, pasta, edible oils, and cement manufacturing.

For years, conversations around Nigeria's maritime traffic have heavily leaned toward Lagos-based ports. However, industry stakeholders and the NPA have lauded BUA’s bold move as a masterstroke in decentralizing cargo traffic, easing congestion, and unlocking the full economic potential of Nigeria's eastern corridors.
NPA Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, welcomed the investment, projecting that it will trigger a 13 to 14 percent surge in cargo traffic, generate valuable foreign exchange, and create hundreds of direct and indirect economic opportunities right here in Rivers State.
As infrastructural work continues to ramp up on-site, Port Harcourt is firmly positioning itself at the center of Nigeria’s next wave of industrialization and trade efficiency.
