A high court in Port Harcourt has granted the state government’s application to take over from the police in the prosecution of one Rtd. Maj. Festus Welewa and two others who are standing trial for allegedly sponsoring criminality in Aluu, in Ikwerre Local Government Area.
The Retired Major and the two others, Ephraim Welewa and Ndubuisi Welewa are all natives of Omuokiri community in Aluu. The police accused them of gun running, armed robbery, and kidnapping. The Rivers State Government filed an application to the court seeking to take over the prosecution of the matter. Along with the application, Justice C.D. Greene also granted bail to Major Festus Welewa in the sum of N5million with two sureties. She adjourned the case to March 7th for hearing.
The Retired Major, through his lawyers, had written a petition to the Inspector General of Police.
