A twenty five-year-old man, Isaiah Gogo has been remanded in Prison custody by a Chief Magistrate court in Port Harcourt for alleged rape of a speech impaired girl in Diobu area of Port Harcourt.
Chief Magistrate F.N Amanze remanded Isaiah Gogo and referred his matter to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advise when the matter came up in court.
The incident was said to have occurred on June 24 at No 20 Adelabu street, Mile Two, Diobu in Port Harcourt.
Isaiah Gogo, who supposedly attends the same Church with the little girl, is facing two count charges of rape and assault of a young girl, an offence punishable with life imprisonment, according to the Laws of Rivers State.
Earlier during the proceedings, lawyer to the accused person, V.C Anaele informed the court that their church had moved in to settle the matter.
Outside the Court room, State Chairman of the International Federation of Women Lawyers FIDA, Anthonia Osademe said that the rate of sexual abuses against young girls in Rivers state was becoming alarming.
“You don’t want to imagine how many of this cases we get in our office on daily basis. I mean on daily basis.
“Everyday at our centre, we get at least five cases of child rape, sexual abuse, defilement or even child labour. I tell you, it is on the increase.
“We just need people to report these cases so we can continue to fight it and get justice for many innocent girls. We believe it will reduce as time goes one but people must not keep quiet,” she said.
Osademr urged victims of child abuse and concerned members of the public to speak out on rape matters.
