Following a devastating gas explosion in the Oroazi area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, on Saturday January 4, 2025; Executive Chairman Amb. Chijioke Ihunwo has expressed his deepest sympathies to the affected residents.
The blast occurred at a gas refilling shop and caused significant damage to nearby buildings. This incident is the latest in a series of gas and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incidents in the state.
According to SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the police command's spokesperson, the explosion was caused
by a welder who was repairing a refrigerator while simultaneously refilling gas, leading to a catastrophic blast. Fortunately, as at the time of this report, 2 lives have been
, and the injured, including the technician, suffered varying degrees of burns and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.The police have launched a full investigation into the incident and will share their findings with the public. An eyewitness, Tamuno, described the scene as devastating, with victims including a pregnant woman, four children, and a couple. Many of the injured were taken to the Rivers State Teaching Hospital, which has the facilities to provide the necessary medical care.

During a visit to the explosion site and Sonabel Hospital, Amb. Ihunwo conveyed his sorrow over the incident and its impact on the community. To demonstrate his support, he announced the immediate release of N3 million to Sonabel Hospital to cover the medical expenses of the injured victims.
This action underscores the council's commitment to the well-being of its residents and highlights their efforts to assist those affected by this tragic event.
