South-South Governors Unite: Reaffirm Regional Cooperation in Yenagoa Meeting



YENAGOA – The Governors of the South-South states convened in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Monday, January 28, to strengthen regional cooperation and advance shared prosperity for the people of the region.
In a communique issued after their extensive deliberations, the governors resolved to foster greater synergy and promote regional investments in critical sectors such as security, agriculture, education, power, environment, tourism, youth empowerment, sports development, ICT, and entrepreneurship.
The governors urged the Federal Government to activate the Port Harcourt railway line and extend it to other states in the region, while also calling for the speedy completion of the ongoing East-West Road project. Additionally, they commended President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for awarding and commencing the Coastal Road project, appealing for construction to begin from the Calabar axis.
While expressing their support for the President’s Tax Reform Bill, the South-South Governors further called for an extension of the proposed VAT sharing percentages to include other areas of derivation such as oil and gas, emphasizing the region’s contribution to the national economy.
Reaffirming their commitment to unity, progress, and collaborative governance, the governors declared their readiness to tackle developmental challenges confronting the region, describing their meeting as a “new beginning of collaboration among the leaders of the South-South region.”
During the meeting, the governors also took time to celebrate their colleague, Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, who marked his 50th birthday.
The meeting was chaired by Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, who also serves as the Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum.
