FG Surprises Parents by Eliminating JSS & SSS, Launches 12-Year Compulsory Basic Education

The Federal Government has officially abolished the Junior and Senior Secondary School system, replacing the traditional 6-3-3-4 framework with a new model of 12 years of continuous basic education prior to entering tertiary institutions.

This significant reform was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the extraordinary National Council on Education meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Additionally, Dr. Alausa disclosed plans to establish 16 years as the minimum age for admission into higher education.

The minister emphasized that the revamped education system is designed to reduce dropout rates, eliminate financial barriers, and provide students with essential vocational and entrepreneurial skills, ensuring that Nigeria's educational framework meets global standards.

The government has laid out comprehensive strategies for this transition, including policy reforms, expansion of educational infrastructure, teacher training programs, and curriculum improvements.
