The Nigerian Army’s 6 Division has delivered a major blow to illegal oil operations in the Niger Delta, announcing the destruction of 18 unauthorized refining sites and the arrest of 17 suspects. The operation, which also saw the seizure of ten boats and over 25,000 litres of stolen petroleum products, spanned Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta states.
In a statement released on Sunday from Port Harcourt, Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, detailed the success of the raids conducted between February 17 and 23, 2025. He emphasized the Army’s commitment to curbing criminal activities in the region, noting that troops, in collaboration with other security agencies, will maintain a strong presence to prevent further illicit operations.
Among the notable achievements, operations in Rivers State—particularly around Kilometre 45 and the Idama general area in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area—resulted in the dismantling of two active refining sites and the interception of three wooden boats carrying over 9,000 litres of stolen crude. Additional efforts near Ogale junction along the Eket axis further bolstered the haul of recovered products.
The 6 Division’s ongoing campaign aims to choke the “freedom of action” of oil thieves and their networks across the Niger Delta, signaling a relentless push to safeguard the region’s resources. As the Army tightens its grip, the impact of these operations could ripple through the local economy and beyond.
