The upgrade focuses on improving access, traffic flow, and overall efficiency at the airport. Key components of the project include:
- Access Road Expansion: The access road leading to the airport is being expanded, with significant milling work near the toll gate, to improve accessibility and traffic flow.
- Internal Road Rehabilitation: Internal roads, particularly those in front of the domestic terminal, are being rehabilitated to address current disrepair and ensure smoother traffic and passenger safety.
- Dedicated Drop-off Zone: A dedicated drop-off zone is under construction at the Domestic Terminal Zone (DTZ) to streamline passenger drop-offs and improve convenience.
- Terminal Front Road Construction: Comprehensive road construction in front of the terminal building will create a more welcoming and efficient environment for arriving and departing passengers.
- Car Park Remodeling: The day and overnight car parks are being remodeled and are nearing completion.
The Rivers State government has assured travelers and stakeholders that the project will be completed in a timely manner to minimize disruption to airport operations. The upgrades are expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency, create a more attractive environment for travelers, and bring the airport in line with international aviation standards.
The government's statement highlighted that this investment underscores its commitment to modernizing airport facilities in the South-South region. This initiative not only aims to elevate the airport's status but also contribute to the economic growth of Rivers State and Nigeria, positioning Port Harcourt as a key travel hub in the region.
