Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is set to honour Professor Ugboma Henry Anthony A. Owumi with the prestigious Excellence in Service Award during its 35th convocation ceremony, taking place from July 21 to July 26, 2025. The award recognizes Prof. Owumi’s outstanding contributions to the university and his exemplary service in advancing academic and administrative excellence.
Prof. Owumi, a distinguished academic and administrator, has been lauded for his transformative leadership in various capacities at UNIPORT, including his role in fostering academic innovation, mentoring students, and driving institutional growth. His efforts have significantly contributed to UNIPORT’s reputation as Nigeria’s top-ranked university and 19th in Africa.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Owunari Georgewill announced the award during a press briefing, highlighting Owumi’s dedication as a key factor in the university’s milestones, particularly as it celebrates its golden jubilee. “Prof. Owumi’s commitment to service embodies the spirit of UNIPORT’s mission to produce graduates and leaders who impact society positively,” Georgewill stated.
The Excellence in Service Award will be presented during the convocation’s main ceremony, alongside the conferment of degrees on 14,861 graduands, including 363 first-class honours recipients, and honorary doctorates to notable figures such as First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and Minister Nyesom Wike. The event underscores UNIPORT’s 50 years of academic excellence and its ongoing commitment to innovation, with new faculties and infrastructure like a 10.7MW solar hybrid power plant.
