Port Harcourt, Rivers State - October 8, 2025

The Nigerian Army’s 6 Division has launched its highly anticipated annual Combat Proficiency Competition in Port Harcourt, aimed at sharpening the skills and readiness of troops stationed in the Niger Delta. The week-long event, which commenced today, is designed to enhance operational efficiency and ensure soldiers are equipped to tackle the region’s unique security challenges.

The competition features a series of rigorous activities, including tactical drills, live-fire simulations, obstacle courses, and physical fitness tests. These exercises are crafted to test the soldiers’ combat readiness, teamwork, and adaptability in high-pressure scenarios. According to Major General Adekunle Adeyemi, a spokesperson for the 6 Division, the event underscores the Army’s commitment to maintaining a high level of preparedness. “This competition ensures our soldiers are prepared for any challenge, from countering insurgency to securing critical infrastructure in the Niger Delta,” he stated during the opening ceremony.

Held at a military training facility in Port Harcourt, the event has drawn participants from various units under the 6 Division’s command. The competition not only fosters camaraderie among troops but also provides an opportunity to identify areas for improvement in training and tactics. “It’s a chance for us to evaluate our strengths and address any gaps,” said Captain Esther Omoregie, one of the event coordinators.

Residents of Port Harcourt have been advised to expect increased military activity, including vehicle movements and controlled exercises, around the city until the competition concludes next week. Local authorities have assured the public that these activities pose no threat and are part of routine efforts to maintain security in the region. Community leaders have also expressed support for the initiative, with Port Harcourt resident and business owner Chidi Okonkwo stating, “It’s reassuring to see our soldiers training hard to keep us safe.”

The 6 Division’s Combat Proficiency Competition comes at a time when the Niger Delta faces ongoing challenges, including oil theft, militancy, and communal clashes. By honing their skills, the troops aim to strengthen their capacity to maintain peace and protect critical assets in the region. The event is expected to wrap up with an awards ceremony, where outstanding performers will be recognized for their excellence in various categories.

As the competition progresses, the 6 Division remains focused on its broader mission of ensuring stability in the Niger Delta, with the event serving as a testament to the Nigerian Army’s dedication to professionalism and readiness.
