Port Harcourt, Rivers State – Following the recent massive defection that reshaped the political landscape of the Rivers State House of Assembly, the remaining members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have swiftly moved to reorganize their internal structure.
Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, has been appointed and sworn in as the new Minority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The New PDP Leadership Structure
Nwankwo's swearing-in, which took place on Thursday, confirms the new leadership structure for the 10 remaining PDP lawmakers (out of the Assembly's total of 32 seats). This step is seen as a crucial effort to strengthen the party's coordination and voice as the official opposition.
Three other PDP principal officers were also sworn in to complete the new minority leadership team:
| New Position | Lawmaker | Constituency |
| Minority Leader | Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo | Omuma |
| Deputy Minority Leader | Hon. Barile Wako (or Nwakoh) | Khana 1 (Source Dependent) |
| Minority Whip | Hon. Dominic Iderima | Abua/Odual |
| Deputy Minority Whip | Hon. Justina Emeji | Emohua |
The restructuring comes after 17 lawmakers, including the Speaker, officially defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), handing the majority control of the Assembly to the APC.
This appointment marks a definitive step by the loyal PDP members to formally constitute their minority leadership and continue legislative activities despite the dramatic political upheaval.
How do you think this new PDP leadership will impact the ongoing political dynamics between the Rivers State Assembly and the Executive?
