PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE — In a major move to tackle the neglect of the elderly in the Niger Delta, the renowned O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation has officially launched its ‘Adopt a Senior Citizen’ initiative.
The humanitarian project was unveiled during a vibrant New Year celebration in Port Harcourt, bringing smiles and renewed hope to hundreds of aged residents under the foundation’s care.
A New Chapter in Elderly Care: What is ‘Adopt a Senior Citizen’?
The initiative is an expansion of the foundation's flagship Care for Life programme. According to the Chairman and Founder, Dr. Seinye Lulu-Briggs, the project is designed to bridge the gap in long-term care by allowing individuals, families, and corporate organizations to partner with the foundation.
“Elderly care is both a moral and social responsibility that must be sustained throughout life,” Dr. Lulu-Briggs stated. “Through ‘Adopt a Senior Citizen,’ we are inviting Nigerians to join us in providing dignity and comfort to those who have spent their lives serving us.”
23 Years of Impact: Over 600 Beneficiaries and Counting
Since its establishment in 2001, the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation has become a pillar of hope in underserved communities. Dr. Lulu-Briggs revealed that over 600 senior citizens have already benefited from the Care for Lifeprogramme, receiving:
Comprehensive Medical Care: Specialized geriatric health services.
Daily Essentials: Consistent provision of food and basic household needs.
Emotional Support: Social engagement and personal assistance to combat loneliness.
"Till the Very End": A Commitment to Dignity
Unlike temporary aid programs, Dr. Lulu-Briggs emphasized that the foundation remains responsible for its enrolled seniors for the rest of their lives. This "cradle-to-grave" philosophy of compassion has earned the foundation accolades from the African Women Lawyers Association and various medical volunteer groups who delivered goodwill messages at the event.
The celebration concluded on a high note with a sermon, the cutting of a massive New Year cake by the seniors, and the distribution of food items and gifts to all in attendance.
