Breaking News: Rivers State University Implements New Traffic Restrictions Following Fatal Accident.

In a swift response to the tragic death of an undergraduate student, the management of Rivers State University (RSU) has announced new, stringent measures regarding the use of private vehicles on campus.   the institution is taking decisive action to curb reckless driving and enhance the safety of its campus community.  

Key Directives for Students

Effective immediately, the following rules apply to vehicular movement within the university premises:

 Night Driving Ban: Undergraduate students are now strictly prohibited from driving personal vehicles on campus between 4 p.m. and 7 a.m..  

Designated Parking: Students who bring vehicles to the university are required to park them at the designated car park near the main gate. For movement within the campus during restricted hours, students are to utilize the university’s authorized shuttle services.  

Exceptions: Postgraduate and Centre for Continuing Education students may still drive on campus, provided they present valid university identity cards.  

Hostel Access: To further bolster security, visiting hours to student hostels have been revised to end at 6 p.m. daily.  

 

The decision follows the untimely death of 21-year-old Eno Udoson, who was allegedly struck by a speeding vehicle driven by an undergraduate on Tuesday. According to reports, the fatal incident involved two students identified as Darlington Onuaku and Obinna Ikechi who were allegedly racing at the time of the collision. Both individuals have been arrested and handed over to the police for investigation and potential prosecution.  

Acting Registrar, Dr. Idanyingi Daminabo, expressed the university’s condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized that the new regulations are intended to prevent future tragedies. The administration has also reiterated that the approved speed limits remain 30 km/h on major roads and 20 km/h in residential areas.  

Management has issued a stern warning: any student found engaging in reckless driving will face immediate suspension, formal disciplinary proceedings, and the impoundment of their vehicle.
