The results are in, and a new voice is set to head to the Senate to represent the people of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
Following the conclusion of the by-election held this past Saturday, June 20, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Olaka Nwogu of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) the winner of the contest.
The Numbers
In a decisive victory, Nwogu secured a total of 47,961 votes. He maintained a significant lead over his opponents, notably the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Osarokaka Ebenezer Erewari, who finished with 1,647 votes.
Context of the Election
This by-election was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of the late Senator Barinada Mpigi earlier this year, which left the senatorial seat vacant. The electoral exercise was keenly contested across seven Local Government Areas within the district:
Khana
Gokana
Tai
Eleme
Andoni
Oyigbo
Opobo
With the electoral process now concluded, constituents are looking forward to seeing how the newly elected Senator will address the challenges and development needs of the Rivers South-East district.
