In a major enforcement drive aimed at sanitizing the healthcare sector, the Rivers State Ministry of Health has moved to seal six medical facilities operating illegally across the state. The crackdown, led by the Anti-Quackery Committee, comes amid disturbing allegations of child trafficking and lethal professional negligence.
Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, Chairman of the Anti-Quackery Committee, confirmed this morning that seven suspects have been taken into custody and are currently assisting the police with investigations.
The Operation: Unmasking the Risks
Investigations by the state health authorities uncovered a pattern of widespread malpractice, where unqualified individuals were found performing complex surgical procedures, prescribing restricted medications, and illegally running training programs for "auxiliary nurses."
"We are committed to weeding out those who put the lives of Rivers people at risk," Dr. Wachukwu stated during the operation. "This is not just about regulation; it is about saving lives from those who have no business in medicine."
Disturbing Cases Under Investigation
The severity of the situation is highlighted by two particularly harrowing cases:
The Elekahia Incident: At EL DONA Hospital, authorities arrested the proprietor and several staff members. The facility is under intense scrutiny following credible allegations of involvement in child trafficking and the swapping of newborns.
The Tragedy in Emohua: In a heartbreaking development at a patent medicine store in Ndele, a 20-year-old recent graduate lost their life after receiving a fatal injection from an operator who lacked formal medical training.
List of Sealed Facilities
The state government has officially sealed the following locations, warning residents to avoid these premises:
EL DONA Hospital (Elekahia)
PLARIV Hospital (Omoku)
Good Shepherd Hospital (Omoku)
Blessed GoodNews Clinic (Bonny Street, Port Harcourt)
ESTATE Clinic (Obio/Akpor)
Unidentified Patent Medicine Store (Ndele, Emohua)
Call to Action for Residents
The Ministry of Health is urging the public to be vigilant and only patronize hospitals and clinics that are duly registered with the state government. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious medical practices or unauthorized clinics to the Ministry of Health immediately.
