A fire incident has been reported at the Senate Wing of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja today, Wednesday, June 10, 2026 but swift action by lawmakers prevented what could have been a far more serious disaster.
The incident occurred in the kitchen compartment of Hearing Room 107, shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, the nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.
The committee, chaired by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, had just wrapped up the exercise when smoke suddenly began billowing from the area, causing a brief moment of concern among lawmakers and staff present.
Eyewitnesses say Senator Ekpenyong, alongside Senator Salihu Mustapha, acted swiftly to contain the situation, preventing the fire from escalating into a major incident.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been caused by a microwave oven that was left switched on in the kitchen area. No casualties have been reported.
Notable that this incident comes during an active NDDC related session a commission with deep ties to the Niger Delta, including Rivers State. We’ll be watching for any official statement from the National Assembly on the full extent of the damage.
