Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has broken his silence on the tragic train derailment that occurred along the Warri Itakpe rail corridor in Delta State, which claimed three lives and left 35 passengers injured.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Obi expressed grief over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
“My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate mishap and I pray for the quick recovery of those injured,” he wrote.
Beyond condolences, Obi used the opportunity to call on the government to take decisive action urging authorities to thoroughly investigate the cause of the derailment and implement measures to prevent a repeat occurrence.
The derailment, which occurred on Monday, June 8 at Agbor, Delta State, saw four coaches come off the tracks. The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with mechanical failure and track-related issues among the possibilities being examined.
Obi’s reaction joins a growing chorus of voices demanding accountability and urgent reform of Nigeria’s rail safety infrastructure.
