The National Union of Tenants of Nigeria (NUTN) has cried out to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, over the skyrocketing cost of accommodation in Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas. In a letter signed by Executive Secretary Mr. Ceaser Enwefah, the union revealed that over 1.5 million residents are currently trapped in a severe housing crisis.
According to the union, standard double-room apartments have jumped from ₦120,000 to an astronomical ₦520,000 annually, while one-bedroom flats are hitting up to ₦1.5 million. NUTN is urging the Rivers State Government to suspend further conversions of residential buildings to commercial properties and temporarily freeze rent increases to protect civil servants and low-income earners.
