The announcement, which was formalized in a statement signed by UNIPORT's Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sam Kpenu, caps off a highly competitive and rigorous academic race. Prof. Chike is scheduled to officially assume office on July 13, 2026, immediately following the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill.
Prof. Chike—a prominent academic who previously served as the Rivers State Commissioner for Health under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike—emerged on top following an intensive screening layout. The selection framework was executed by a dedicated Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, operating in strict compliance with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act.
Following the final physical interviews conducted at the university's main senate complex in Choba, the Governing Council formally handed over the statutory appointment letter to the incoming VC.
