PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA – As the iconic Rivers State Television (RSTV) celebrates its 41st anniversary today, Thursday, June 4, 2026, the Rivers State Government has firmly declared that the era of relying entirely on government allocations for state-run media is over.
Speaking at the anniversary ceremony at the station's complex in Port Harcourt, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Honour Sirawoo, urged the management to transform the station into a commercially viable asset.
The directive comes on the heels of intense pressure from regional groups, including the Movement for the Survival of the Ijaw Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND), calling on Governor Fubara to heavily fund and revamp the state's deteriorating media outfits. Sirawoo pushed back, stating that waiting for government intervention is a failing strategy in a volatile economic climate, challenging RSTV to aggressively leverage its new digital platforms to generate internal capital.
