In a proactive move to safeguard residents, the Rivers State Government has taken decisive action in response to two recent public safety concerns: the ongoing gas leakage in the Bille Community and the tragic building collapse on Peter Odili Road.
Addressing the Bille Gas Leak
Following reports of gas seepage in the Bille Community of Degema Local Government Area, Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara convened an emergency meeting with federal authorities, industry operators, and community leaders.
A Call for Permanent Resolution: Emphasizing that the safety of citizens is a primary responsibility of government, Governor Fubara has demanded a comprehensive and lasting solution to the environmental and health risks posed by the leak.
Healthcare Support: As a direct response to the community's health concerns, the Governor has pledged an immediate upgrade to the Bille Primary Healthcare Centre, ensuring that residents have better access to quality medical care during this period.
Federal Collaboration: The Federal Government, represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, has assured residents that experts are working to identify the root cause of the seepage. Both state and federal agencies are working in tandem to provide immediate relief, including potable water and support services for those affected.
Building Safety and Regulatory Compliance
The state government has also adopted a "zero-tolerance" policy regarding building safety following a five-storey building collapse on Peter Odili Road last month.
Site Closure: Governor Fubara has ordered the site to remain strictly sealed pending the conclusion of a thorough investigation into the root cause of the collapse.
Enforcing Standards: Preliminary investigations suggest the tragedy which resulted in loss of life could have been avoided had the developers complied with state inspection requirements and modern engineering standards. The government has signaled that it will no longer accept claims of "federal jurisdiction" or lack of authority as a barrier to ensuring public safety.
Accountability: The Governor expressed his regret that such an incident could occur in an era of advanced engineering, reiterating that the state government is committed to holding those responsible for negligence accountable.
