War on Floods: Opobo/Nkoro Introduces Monthly Environmental Sanitation
To permanently tackle the challenge of flash flooding across the area, the Council has officially instituted a mandatory monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
Announcing the initiative in a statement, the Chairman of the Council’s Environmental and Sanitation Committee, Warisenibo Robert A. Cookey-Gam, revealed that the maiden exercise is scheduled to take place this Saturday, July 26, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Residents across the local government area have been strongly urged to take charge of their immediate surroundings by:
Clearing overgrown grasses and weeds around their homes.
Properly desilting drainage channels to ensure the unhindered flow of rainwater.
Restraining domestic animals and livestock from roaming freely to prevent damage to public and private properties.
The Council emphasizes that collective participation is key to keeping Opobo/Nkoro clean, safe, and flood-free.

Grassroots Mandate Commends Leadership: The Opobo/Nkoro Grassroots Mandate, a prominent socio-political organization, recently honored the Council Chairman, Barr. James Aforyagha James, at a ceremony held at Heliconia Park Hotel, Port Harcourt. Presenting the plaque, the organization's Secretary, Hon. David Apiafi, lauded Barr. James for his stellar achievements in human capital development and infrastructural transformation, noting his dedication to sustainable growth.
NYSC Honors Council Boss: In a separate event at the Chairman’s Lodge in Opobo Town, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the LGA added their voice of appreciation. The Corps Liaison Officer (CLO), Sunny Titus flanked by the Council’s Vice Chairman, Gladys Daniel LeggJack presented an award of honor to the Chairman, thanking him for his unwavering support and welfare provisions for corps members. The CLO also appealed for the establishment of a monitoring committee to further strengthen corps coordination in the area.
Responding to the accolades, an elated Barr. James expressed deep gratitude to both bodies, describing the recognitions as a powerful call to do more. He reiterated his administration’s firm commitment to delivering innovative, people-oriented projects that will continuously uplift the well-being of the good people of Opobo/Nkoro.
