The office of President Muhammadu Buhari has made an official statement regarding the Ogoni clean up. The statement was contained in an image shared in a tweet early this morning by the President’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad.
The statement said the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) is about to begin contracting experts for the clean-up of the impacted sites in Ogoni. “On the Ogoni Cleanup: The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) is set to commence the procurement process for contracting experts for the remediation and clean-up of impacted sites”
This update from the presidency is coming two days after the Project Coordination Office of HYPREP released a statement detailing its progress on the Ogoni Clean-up in the last nine months. The office stated that it has engaged in community sensitization, training of Ogoni native graduates of environment, preliminary data collection, and demonstration of remediation technologies.
The Ogoni Clean-up was flagged off by President Buhari who was represented by Vice President Osinbajo two years ago. The flag off was criticized mainly by major opposition leaders as a stunt for the Rivers State rerun election which was scheduled for that year.
