Video: Bizarre Items Found in Rivers Churches: Two Pastors Arrested

Two pastors, Umoren Bassey (60) and Elija Aniete (51), were arrested in Rivers State on January 20, 2025, after youths in Rumunduru, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, discovered a cache of bizarre items within their church premises.

The suspects, natives of Akwa-Ibom State, were apprehended and handed over to the Rivers State Police Command.

During a press briefing, Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko revealed that a search of the pastors' churches – God Deliverance Apostolic Church and Power House of Glory International Church – uncovered a disturbing array of items, including:

  • A live cartridge
  • A sword
  • Two wooden coffins
  • Fake naval passports
  • Thousands of people's pictures and passports
  • Bottles containing unknown liquids
  • Children's shoes
  • Calabashes, coconuts, and Bibles
  • Police uniforms
  • Various spiritual items

While initial reports suggested the discovery of a python and a large casket, these claims were later found to be unsubstantiated.

Pastor Bassey, when questioned, claimed that he used the spiritual items for prayer as directed by God. He also accused the community of planting some of the items found in his church and conducting an illegal search of his residence. He maintained his innocence, stating that he had been healing people and serving the community for 17 years.

Pastor Aniete, who claimed to own a church and be a member of a maritime organization, stated that he was visiting Pastor Bassey to discuss maritime-related issues.

The Rivers State Police Command is currently investigating the matter further.
