The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its planned nationwide protest against the proposed 50% hike in telecom service tariffs.
The protest, originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 4th, was suspended following a meeting in Abuja with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. 2 The government and NLC have agreed to form a 10-person committee, comprised of five representatives from each side, to review the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) study and develop an implementable resolution within two weeks. 3 NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajero, reiterated the union's opposition to the tariff increase and its concerns about the impact of government tax policies. Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, described the discussions as productive.
