Shell has reported an oil spill in Ogale, near Port Harcourt, attributing the incident to the overflow of a saver pit during flushing operations.
In a statement, the company announced that its spill response team was able to contain the overflow and notified local authorities. Shell indicated that plans are underway for a joint inspection led by regulators to assess the cause and effects of the spill.
According to the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), the spill occurred when an underground pit filled with crude oil began leaking into a pipeline linked to a section of the Ogoni cleanup project.
The Niger River delta region of Nigeria has suffered from decades of oil spills, resulting in extensive environmental degradation that has devastated the livelihoods of countless local residents and adversely affected their health.
