Fubara Disbands Support Groups for Peace in Rivers State

Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved all his socio-political support groups, including the prominent Simplified Movement, to foster lasting peace in the state. The announcement came during a Saturday meeting in Port Harcourt with his political allies, including former Chief of Staff Edison Ehie, ex-cabinet members, local government chairmen, elders, women, and youth leaders.

Fubara described the decision as a significant sacrifice for reconciliation, stating, “The sacrifice for total peace will be heavy, but I urge you to accept it in good faith.” The move follows a peace meeting brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja on Friday, involving Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule. This marked a critical step toward resolving the prolonged political crisis that has disrupted governance, economic activities, and development in Rivers State.

Speaking at the Simplified Movement office, Fubara reassured supporters that his decisions prioritize their collective interest, emphasizing peace and progress. “I cannot abandon you,” he said. “This is the time to prove I care. The sacrifice for peace is heavy, and I ask everyone to prepare for it.” He acknowledged the disappointment among his loyalists but stressed that leadership sometimes requires tough choices for a greater purpose.

Fubara noted the crisis’s impact on state projects and expressed optimism that reconciliation would revive governance and development. Reflecting on his political journey, he recognized Wike’s role in his rise, saying, “Nobody can take away the role the FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, played — that’s the truth. Despite our differences, the risks he took cannot be wished away.”

Urging unity, Fubara said, “If we believe we’re one family and support the President, what’s the issue? If you’re with me, prove it now, because it’s about the state’s interest.” He used a local analogy to call for patience: “In my place, the mother Tilapia tells her young, ‘Hide your head in the mud to grow big.’ We’ve done our best; now we need peace to grow.”
