Tension is significantly escalating across Rivers State's 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) due to the imminent expiration of the current LGA Chairmen's tenures. These chairmen, many of whom are known to be loyal to the faction led by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, face a potential standoff with the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
There are widespread concerns regarding a potential violent power vacuum at the grassroots level. This fear stems from the possibility that the outgoing chairmen may refuse to vacate their positions, coinciding with anticipated moves by Governor Fubara to dissolve the councils and potentially appoint caretaker committees—a move the chairmen have vowed to resist.
In anticipation of civil unrest or a breakdown of order, the security presence has been visibly increased around key LGA Secretariats throughout the state.
"We have alerted security agencies to preempt any breakdown of law and order in the grassroots. The police command, working with other agencies, is prepared to ensure peace." — Grace Iringe-Koko(Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer and Security Spokesperson)
