Today, April 11, 2026, the ancient kingdom of Opobo held its breath as Rivers State gathered to say a final goodbye to one of its most revered traditional rulers.
His Royal Majesty, King Dr. Dandeson Douglas Jaja, CFR, DSSRS, Jeki V, JP — the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Opobo Kingdom — was laid to rest today, in a ceremony that drew traditional councils, royal delegations, community leaders, and dignitaries from across the Niger Delta.
Among those who made the journey to Opobo was the Abonnema Council of Chiefs, who came to pay their final respects to a king they honoured in life and mourned in death.
King Dandeson Douglas Jaja was born into the royal lineage of the House of Jaja — direct descendants of the legendary King Jaja of Opobo (1821–1891), founder of the Opobo Kingdom, who rose from slavery in Bonny to become one of the most powerful rulers in the Niger Delta before being exiled by British colonial forces. To wear that crown was to carry centuries of history. King Dandeson did so with grace.
On January 23, 2010, he was installed as the Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, taking the title Jeki V. His reign, spanning over four decades of service to his people, was defined by a strong voice on issues affecting the Niger Delta — particularly resource control, development, and environmental justice.
His widow, Queen Prudence Dandeson Douglas Jaja, described her late husband as a gentle, humble man who was deeply committed to the progress of Rivers State and Nigeria. Rivers State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu, who had earlier led a condolence visit to the family, said that the late monarch contributed not only to Opobo and Rivers State, but to Nigeria as a nation.
Today's burial in Opobo ran simultaneously with the funeral of Late Senator Barinada Mpigi in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area — both men distinguished sons of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, laid to rest on the same solemn Saturday. For many across Rivers State, the coincidence felt like the closing of a significant chapter.
But chapters do not end. They turn.
King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jeki V — Amanyanabo of Opobo, custodian of a royal legacy that stretches back to 1870, servant of his people to the very last — has gone home. His legacy, like the river that runs through Opobo, will keep flowing through the generations.
Rest in perfect peace, Your Majesty. 🕊👑
