“No Hiding Place”: Tinubu Declares War on Corrupt Officials as New EFCC Office Opens in Ekiti

President Bola Tinubu has issued his strongest anti-corruption statement yet, declaring that corrupt officials will find no refuge under his administration as Nigeria continues to intensify its fight against graft.

The declaration came on Tuesday as President Tinubu inaugurated the new Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Zonal Directorate Office in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, where he used the occasion to reiterate his administration’s determination to sustain the anti-corruption war through stronger institutions, improved operational capacity, and enhanced support for anti-graft agencies.

Represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu stressed that the campaign against corruption must remain organised, sustained, and supported by appropriate institutions, effective tools and a conducive working environment.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that corruption has become the most dangerous threat to human existence because every security, political, economic and social crisis can be traced to the contagion of corruption,” the President declared. The EFCC’s Recent Track Record

The President’s declaration is backed by a growing list of convictions. A former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, was convicted of fraud and money laundering involving ₦33.8 billion and sentenced to 75 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja, with the court condemning the diversion of funds meant for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.

Additionally, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties linked to former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami and two of his sons properties valued at approximately ₦213.2 billion, located across Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna states, suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities. Tinubu also pointed to these recent high-profile corruption prosecutions, saying such convictions send a strong message that accountability remains non-negotiable: “The EFCC’s recent prosecution of several high-profile corruption cases sends a clear message that there are no hiding places for the corrupt.”

Bringing the Fight Closer to Home

The President expressed confidence that the newly commissioned Ekiti zonal office would bring anti-corruption enforcement closer to the grassroots and improve the effectiveness of institutions tasked with tackling financial crimes.

Tinubu also highlighted the EFCC’s role in forcing fraudulent Ponzi schemes out of the market and securing Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force’s grey list  a milestone that has strengthened economic reforms and improved the country’s investment outlook.

The Reaction Online

The President’s declaration has already sparked sharp reactions across Nigerian social media, with many Nigerians expressing skepticism given the scale of corruption that persists at federal, state, and local government levels. Comments ranging from outright dismissal to cautious optimism reflect a public that has heard strong anti-corruption rhetoric before and is watching closely to see whether this time, the actions match the words.

For Port Harcourt and Rivers State residents who have long felt the impact of corruption on oil revenue distribution, infrastructure delivery, and public services, the question is not whether the war on corruption has been declared it is whether it will be fought all the way to the doorstep of every corrupt official, regardless of political affiliation.
