The Nigerian Navy is ramping up its offensive against economic saboteurs, as Operation Delta Sentinel continues to yield major breakthroughs in the fight against crude oil theft and illegal refining across Rivers State.
In a series of intelligence-led operations throughout July 2026, naval personnel have successfully dismantled multiple illegal storage hubs and refining sites that have long threatened the integrity of our local waterways and national resources.
Recent Operational Successes
The Navy’s tactical approach which focuses on destroying the infrastructure of these criminal syndicates before they can scale their operations has resulted in significant seizures this month:
Bonny Axis: Operatives from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny have been particularly active, recently uncovering concealed dugout pits in the Okpokiri community. These pits held approximately 39,500 litres of suspected stolen crude oil, highlighting how criminal networks use the intricate creek environment to stockpile products before illegal evacuation.
Egbema Axis: In the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, officials from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER dismantled four illegal refining sites. The operation resulted in the recovery of 43,000 litres of illicitly refined products, including Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK).
Proactive Prevention: In other parts of the Bonny LGA, the Navy thwarted a fresh attempt to establish an illegal storage facility, dismantling newly excavated pits around the Dema Abbey community to deny criminals the necessary logistics to store stolen assets.
A Shift in Strategy
According to the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the current strategy goes beyond simple interceptions. By targeting the "logistics architecture"the storage pits, refining ovens, and distribution channels the Navy is effectively degrading the operational capacity of these syndicates.
"Our objective is to dismantle the entire value chain that sustains crude oil theft," Capt. Folorunsho stated. "By destroying these sites, we deny economic saboteurs the freedom of action they need to exploit our nation's vital oil and gas assets."
Community Impact
These operations are critical, not just for the national economy, but for the local environment. Illegal refining remains a primary driver of environmental degradation in our communities. PortHarcourtBlog will continue to monitor these developments as the Navy maintains its 90-day extension of Operation Delta Sentinel to ensure sustained pressure on these networks.
